I have been very fortunate the past four years to have been a judge in various categories for the Aurealis Awards. For those of you that don’t know, the Aurealis Awards are given to the best Australian speculative fiction in various genres and formats. I am honoured to have read science fiction novels this year, and have a list of books that I am eagerly waiting for the sequels of! I have adored being a part of this process. The wide variety of interpretation of genre, the heated debates over the shortlists, and best, getting to read some amazing stories written by some amazing people.
The shortlists for 2014 works were announced on Friday and can be found here. It’s such a great starting place if you are interested in reading some excellent spec fic works.
I am thinking that this will have been my last judging year for a while. I am a little tired and a little in need of some time to myself. Not that I don’t LOVE reading Aus spec fic, because I do, but maybe do so without being constrained by deadlines.
Have you been a judge for anything before? How did you find the process?
